Elijah Arranz fundraising update

For the past month the Tigers have been fundraising for Elijah Arranz since he was in a terrible skydiving accident that has left him in a coma. Everyone who knows Elijah recognise if anyone can fight their way back from such a serious fall it is this young, energetic and dedicated man.

Elijah has been a member of our club for many years and we all dearly miss seeing him doing what he loves most which is to run.

Of course we are all forever grateful to the instructor Tony Rokov an “incredible hero” who saved Elijah’s life. Tony’s heroics and quick thinking in the final seconds of the skydive is the reason we are able to support Elijah in his brave recovery from the terrible injuries that he did suffer.

Elijah’s plight has touched many people in Ginninderra’s Community as well at his school and other places that play such a big part of his life including Basketball and Martial Arts.

The generosity and best wishes that the Tigers have received on behalf of the Arranz family has been incredible. In the past 24 days we have managed to raise over $27,420 through the support of 272 people.

Incredibly the GoFundMe page was shared 1500 times on Facebook and 49,439 people engaged with the campaign on Facebook.

During last month’s UC Life Gift each athlete wore Elijah’s registration number in recognition of their team mate, who would have competed in the event. Ginninderra collected donations for Elijah’s family during the Beyond Bank Ginninderra Carnival, celebrating the club’s 40th anniversary.

Mount Rogers Primary School held a fun run  for Elijah where students ran laps to help raise funds in early December.

Elijah’s team mates at the Ginninderra Rats Basketball team have arranged a Ballin’ for Eli event on Saturday the 19th of December. It is a 24 hour basketball event at the Belconnen Basketball Stadium. It is intended as a family oriented event with games going for the full 24 hours. Feature events include a dunk contest, a three point shootout and a basketball skills event. This follows the show of support across the last round of Basketball in November where players wore coloured socks in support for Elijah.

dinner and auction fundraiser is to be held on  6th of February 2016. Some great items have been donated and all the proceeds will go towards helping Elijah in his recovery.

2015 Relay Championships

The UC Tigers entered 13 teams in the 2015 Relay Championships held at Woden Athletics Field. Ginninderra’s entries were in all four events including the Open Men’s and Women’s 4x100m and 4x400m Relays.

Ginninderra included dual registered athletes in each team and it was great to see so many athletes wearing tiger uniform. Such was the Tigers’ presence at the Championships that one complete Heat of the 4x100m relay featured just teams from UC Ginninderra Athletics Club.

From the four events Ginninderra finished with One Gold, Two Silver and a Bronze. A fantastic all round result from the club in its first season since returned to the Association.

There was some controversy in the Men’s 4x100m Relay with one Tiger team disqualified while a competitor’s team in the next heat left their lane managed to go unnoticed in the home straight.

It was a great day and a wonderful initiative to include Open Events within the LAACT Relay Championships where the Tigers finished second overall. A big improvement on last season and a strong showing by only missing the top position by 4.5 points. This follows the Tigers incredible first placing at the LAACT Multi Event Carnival in November.

This year’s results mimic UC’s inaugural entry into an AACT Relay Championships in 1998 when the team finished first on on 222 points, from South Canberra Tuggeranong second on 193 points and Woden Harriers third on 43 points.

Photos from the event have been posted to the Tigers’ Facebook Album. Full results from the Athletics ACT events follow.

2015 Australian All Schools Championships Day 3

The 2015 Australian All Schools Championships have come to a close with some great results for the ACT team.

Action on the 3rd day included Ruth Carson competing in the 16G 800m where she finished 8th in a new Personal Best time of 2:28.41.

Mitchell Baker claimed a silver medal in the 3000m Walk for U16B with a best time of 13:56.31. Mitch’s performance follows on from his silver at the Australian Race Walking Championships in September. Mitchell also made his Nationals debut in the Pole Vault last night where he cleared 2.20m in the Final coming 14th overall.

Eden Thomas ran 15.71s in his 100m Heat finishing 3rd. Unfortunately he did not progress to the final.

Nick Ashmore cracked the top ten in the Country in the 18B Javelin Final with a best throw of 48.19m finishing in 9th place.

Sam Wade performed strongly in his 200m Heat finishing 5th in a near PB time of 23.89s.

Jeremy Maranan running in the fastest 100m Heat of the morning in the 14B placed 5th with a time of 12.40s.

Matt Walters‘ 400m love affair caught up with him today having raced 4 of them in 3 days against the best in the country, his tired legs couldn’t quite give him the PB he was looking for in running 56.61s. It was good enough to give him a top 8 finish in the country though which is fantastic. Matt also backed up to run in the ACT 4x100m Relay team which placed 4th overall.

Tristan Vergano improved on his Triple Jump performance at State Championships with a season best 11.92m in the 18B.

Josh Beale and Sam Wade combined again in the U16B 1000m Swedish Medley Relay where the ACT team came a credible 7th place in the final.

Photos form today have been posted by Athletics Exclusive on their Facebook page.
