The UC Ginninderra Athletics Club is pleased to announce that UC Tiger athlete Alex van der Meer Simo has accepted a role as a Director on the Board of Athletics ACT.
Alex who is a talented endurance athlete in his own right, with a 2:22 (Marathon) and 1:08 (Half-Marathon), has previously held the role of Participation and Development Officer with AACT as well as a similar role with Athletics NT.
Alex has also had successful international stints coaching in Laos and Peru in recent years. Alex will also be the new Chair of the AACT Selection Committee. In his spare time Alex trains with Team Telford.
Week in and week out UC Ginninderra Athletics Club’s Throwers support the Athletics ACT Summer Series meets at the AIS and Woden. Every now and again some magnificent performances stand out.
At the 19th November competition Cameron Crombie again entertained the crowd with his latest breaking of the F38 Australian and Oceania Shot Put record. Crombie’s 13.40m surpassed his previous mark of 12.55m set in October.
Not to be outdone, Dylan Best (Shot Put 7.63m), Zamir Bulbul (Shot Put 10.15m) and Stephen Fraser (Discus 40.49m) also threw Personal Bests at the Athletics ACT meet.
Nine of Ginninderra’s best throwers competed on Saturday including Cameron “the moon boot” Best who showed injury wasn’t going to slow him down.
The Women were well represented by Charlotte Rauraa who was recently named in the ACT Schools Team for Discus and Shot. The State team containing 4 other Tiger Throwers including Teilya Hetaraka also in the Shot Put and Discus.
Ginninderra’s Cameron Crombie has again laid waste to the F38 Australian and Oceania Shot Put record smashing the previous best (12.01m) that he only broke back in February 2016 at the AIS.
Cameron who is a member of Athletics Australia’s National Athlete Support Structure threw the new mark of 12.55m with the support of his UC Tigers team mates. With his Coach and former Paralympian, World Record-holder and Ginninderra/Uni member Hamish Macdonald also watching on.
Crombie’s rise in the sport follows a success 2015-16 campaign where he also a Paralympic B Qualifier in the Men’s Javelin in July.
With Spring in the air, UC Ginninderra’s Thursday Throwers session returns again, starting 5:00pm on the 25th of August 2016 at Charnwood Oval.
The Tossers (group nickname) is a social get together with the Club’s Throws Coaches and older athletes to practice the finer points of each throwing discipline.
Warm up drills, technical corrections, immediate feedback and plenty of good humour banter summarises the Thursday Group who meet right through summer.
The Thursday training in throws is a perfect fit for Masters, School and University students hoping to get regular coaching from experienced older athletes.
All members of the UC Ginninderra Athletics Club will be eligible to enter these free sessions which are run to compliment the weekend Athletics program, giving athletes more practice and opportunities to throw each and every week. Early Bird registration is now open and Little Athletes are welcome to dual register with the UC Ginninderra Tigers at no cost to gain access to our Intraclub events including the Tossers on a Thursday afternoon.

In previous seasons Athletics ACT have offered a direct membership to the Association. However starting October 2016, athletes must choose a Club to compete with.

Little Athletics ACT are also offering Early Bird deal. All athletes who register and pay for their registration before 31st August 2016 will be entered into a draw to have the total cost of their registration reimbursed. Five athletes will be chosen at random by the Association (LAACT) to receive their full fees reimbursed. We encourage all athletes aged 12 to 17 years to register with their local Little Athletics Club and then dual register with us for free.
